Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art with Japanese roots, developed and modified largely by the Gracie family of Belem in the North East of the South American nation. BJJ emphasizes use of technique and leverage to overcome strength and aggression â€“ hence the literal translation â€œThe Gentle Artâ€�.
A variety of takedowns, ground controls, joint locks and chokes are employed to subdue opponents in sport and self-defence situations. The inception of the UFC in 1993 served as a demonstration of its effectiveness, with Royce Gracie defeating eleven fighters to take 3 of the first 4 UFC tournament titles. To this day, BJJ is an integral part of almost every MMA competitors training regimen. Correct and mindful practice of BJJ offers the participant a fun, safe and practical method of increasing confidence and fitness - as well as the opportunity to become part of a team that grows with each other every time they get onto the mats.
